Clinker grinding and cement packing plant in the port of Beira, Mozambique
The Company’s initial investment in the cement market will be in Mozambique. In partnership with CalMe SpA (www.calmegroup.com), it will design, construct and operate a clinker grinding and cement packing plant in the port of Beira, Mozambique.
CalMe SpA, a private family managed company, is a leading cement and lime producer in Italy with a strong engineering culture. CalMe will be the joint venture’s EPCM contractor. The plant will have a design capacity of 800'000 tonnes a year and will supply quality cement at a reasonable price to the growing local market and certain export markets in landlocked Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and the Katanga Province in DRC.
CalMe SpA and the Company have agreed to a minimum equity funding commitment of USD 8 million. The balance of the project funding expected to be approximately USD 16 million will be raised from third party financial institutions.
The Mozambique authorities have approved the investment and the Company is now busy securing the necessary permits and licenses.
Engineering design is practically final and preparatory work on the industrial site purchased by the Company in Beira, including an environmental impact study has been initiated. Construction of the plant is expected to take between 12 and14 months after obtention of the permits and environmental license. Based on current market conditions and a slow build up of capacity up to 75%, the Beira project demonstrates a robust financial performance.
